Michael Hubbard scored 16 points to lead six players in double figures as San Diego topped the University of California, San Diego, 81-66 Tuesday night.

Nick Lewis added 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.

Reserve Brandon Gay scored all of his 10 points in the second half and had nine rebounds for the Toreros (3-8), who held a 32-26 halftime lead before dealing the Tritons (1-6) their fourth straight loss.


Reserve Parker Berling scored a game-high 17 points for UCSD.

Jesse Boyd, who averaged a team-high 21.3 points per game entering the night, was held to nine points after getting into early foul trouble.

The Toreros improved their home record to 3-1 this season, in contrast to an 0-7 mark on away or neutral courts.

San Diego prevailed for the third time in the three years since the crosstown series was revived. Each of the two previous games was decided by at least 27 points.

San Diego owns an overall 17-1 edge over the Tritons, who compete in Division II school without scholarships.

In the first half, the Tritons faced their biggest deficit, 23-7, before scoring 13 unanswered points to close within 23-20 with 6:48 before halftime.

San Diego went scoreless for more than eight minutes, while missing 10 straight attempts from the field, before Lewis followed a rebound with a layup with 4:20 before halftime.

San Diego later hit three straight three-pointers to build a 60-43 lead with 9:10 left. The Tritons responded with 13 unanswered points to close within 60-56 with 6:21 to go but the Toreros answered with 11 consecutive points to resume control.

Until their dry spell, the Toreros went 9-of-12 from the field, including 4-of-5 from three-point range.
