Tommy Gunn and Michael Cuffee scored 14 points each to lead Middle Tennessee to a 70-56 victory Thursday over Austin Peay.
Middle Tennessee (5-3) took the lead for good midway through the first half and led 35-25 at halftime. Austin Peay (3-6) got as close as 59-49 with 6:01 left in the second half on a jumper by Adrian Henning, who finished with 14 points.
The Blue Raiders
made 19-of-22 free throws while Austin Peay hit just 8-of-22.
Anthony Davis led the Governors with 15 points. He and Henning were the only
Austin Peay players in double figures.
Alex Weekes added 13 for the Blue Raiders and hit 6-of-8 from the floor.
Austin Peay's last
lead was 17-16 on a free throw by Davis with 8:39 left in the first half.
Nigel Dixon had 23 points and 16 rebounds as Western Kentucky dominated Ball State under the basket Tuesday night on its way to a 78-69 victory.
Dixon grabbed 11 of the Hilltoppers' 24 offensive rebounds, helping them to a 48-33 rebounding edge and a 32-10 advantage in second-chance points for the game. Dixon scored seven points and Anthony Winchester scored nine in the opening minutes of the game as Western Kentucky (3-6) took a quick 16-4 lead.
Winchester finished with 17 points and Mike Wells added 15 for Western Kentucky. Ball State (3-4) was led by Dennis Trammell with 24 points and Robert Owens scored 14.
Ball State closed the Hilltoppers' lead to 41-32 at halftime, but trailed by double-digits for most of the second half. The closest the Cardinals came was when a jumper by Trammell closed the gap to 72-68 with 38 seconds left in the game.
Western Kentucky responded by hitting six consecutive free throws to close the game.
