Greg Jenkins had 20 points and 18 rebounds to lead Iona past Fordham 73-65 Tuesday night.
Steve Burtt added 15 points, including 12 to lead a second-half surge, as the Gaels (3-5) snapped a three-game losing streak. The sophomore guard pumped in three baskets from beyond the arc to key a 15-5 spree.
The run ended in
Burtt's 3 from the right corner that created a 58-53 advantage with 4:58 to
play. The Gaels, who led 30-28 at halftime, had trailed by as much as 46-39
when the Rams' Mushon Ya'akosi put in a rebound 7:25 into the second half.
Iona preserved the victory by sinking six of 10 foul shots in the last 46 seconds.
The shaky Gaels converted 11 of 22 from the line to five of 10 for Fordham.
Ya'akosi and Drew Williamson finished with 14 points apiece to lead Fordham (2-6). Ya'akosi, a sophomore forward, grabbed 14 rebounds.
The Rams played the opening half without Michael Haynes, their leading scorer and rebounder, who sat out with what was described as a high ankle sprain. He played 18 minutes in the second half, however, and closed with 10 points.
But that was not enough to keep the Rams from their third consecutive defeat.
Ricky Soliver and DeShaun Williams added 10 points apiece for Iona.
