Stanford reserve sophomores Dan Grunfeld and Matt Haryasz took advantage of some extra minutes in the fifth-ranked Cardinal's 67-37 victory over Southern Utah on Monday night.
Grunfeld scored a career-high 21 points by going 5-of-8 from the field and 9-for-9 from the free throw line in 22 minutes, while Haryasz added a career-high 15 points by going 11-of-12 from the free throw line.
``I never look
ahead and say to myself, 'I should be getting some extra minutes there,''' Grunfeld
said. ``We don't think that way at all. We prepare the same way for every game,
and we all expect to see time out there. We know what we're supposed to be doing,
and we play as a team each time out.''
The Cardinal (8-0) moved up three spots in this week's rankings after an 87-80
victory over Gonzaga on Saturday in the Pete Newell Challenge.
Haryasz and Rob Little each grabbed eight rebounds for Stanford, which went to its bench early.
``Our starters played a lot of minutes the other night (against Gonzaga), and they might have come out a litle flat at first,'' Haryasz said. ``That gave Danny and I a chance to come in early and show what we could do. Once we all got into a rhythm, we had our way out there.''
The overmatched Thunderbirds (4-5) had no player in double figures and were led by David Palmer's seven points.
``Our bench really came in and gave us a lift,'' Stanford coach Mike Montgomery said. ``Our front-line guys were a little tired, and it showed early on. But we have a lot of depth.''
Southern Utah coach Bill Evans said Stanford did nothing to surprise him.
``They're a solid team from top to bottom, and well-coached,'' he said. ``We were a step or two slower than all of them, to a man. Give them credit.''
Stanford's starters, who played the majority of the game against Gonzaga, mostly rested as their backups controlled the court, scoring 21 of the team's first 28 points. Stanford broke away with a 24-2 run to take a 29-7 lead at the 7:35 mark of the first half.
Grunfeld had 11 points during the spurt, and Haryasz added eight. Southern Utah was held scoreless for nearly 10 minutes during the Cardinal's scoring run.
Stanford shot 48 percent from the field to 23 percent for Southern Utah. The Cardinal also held a 43-29 rebounding edge.
Josh Childress, a junior forward and the Cardinal's top returning scorer from last season, has a stress reaction in his left foot and hasn't played yet this season. He's expected back by early January, when the Pac-10 season begins.
