Michael Harris scored 24 points and Brock Gillespie added 16, including four 3-pointers, to lead Rice to an 81-55 win over Navy Monday night.
Harris also had five blocks and seven rebounds. Morris Almond had 13 points and two blocks and Jason McKrieth scored 10.
Jeff Charles led Navy with 13 points.
The game was tied at 14-14 in the first half before Rice (7-2) outscored Navy (2-7) 30-12, including a 14-0 run to take a 44-26 halftime lead. Rice shot 60 percent from the field in the second half and led by as many as 31 points.
Both teams turned
the ball over often. Navy finished with 26 turnovers and Rice had 23. Rice had
15 steals.
Danny Granger scored 22 points and had 16 rebounds to lead New Mexico to a 65-49 win over New Mexico State Monday night.
Granger, the former Bradley standout who transferred to New Mexico last January, had his second straight impressive outing for the Lobos (5-3). He scored 18 points and had 9 rebounds in his debut for the Lobos on Sunday in a 74-56 win over Coppin State
New Mexico State
(5-4) beat New Mexico 67-48 three weeks ago, but in that game the Lobos were
without Granger and guard Troy DeVries, a transfer from Portland State that
like Granger wasn't eligible until Monday.
DeVries added 15 points, including a trio of 3-pointers.
New Mexico State hit just 5 of its first 20 shots, had its leading scorer, Duane John, in foul trouble early and got no closer than the final score in the second half.
James Moore, the Sun Belt Conference player of the year last season, led the Aggies with 22 points. John scored 10, far short of his 21.6 average and his 33-point game against the Lobos in the Aggies' win in Las Cruces.
John was 4-of-14 shooting in the Aggies' lowest point production this season and their fourth loss in the last five games.
With Granger scoring inside and DeVries finding open spots on the perimeter, New Mexico went on a 10-0 run for a 31-9 lead with 5:23 left in the first half.
New Mexico, which held Coppin State to 17 first half points, nearly duplicated the defensive effort against NMSU before John hit a 12-footer with 20 seconds left that made it 39-19 New Mexico.
David Chiotti hit back-to-back baskets inside to start the second half and any hopes the Aggies had of mounting a comeback ended quickly as they missed their first five shots, three of them airballs.
Chiotti also had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds as New Mexico had a 44-23 edge in rebounding.
