Jon Bell scored 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds Saturday to lead Utah Valley State to an 89-60 win over Montana-Western.
Utah Valley State (6-4) finished with four other players in double figures, led by Ronnie Price's 21 points. David Heck and Ryan Toolson each scored 14, while Pierre Thomas added 13.
The Wolverines
shot 53 percent (33-of-62) from the floor while holding the Bulldogs (6-9) to
40 percent on 22-of-55 shooting.
Jeff Feenstra and Neil Christiaens led the Bulldogs with 14 points.
Utah Valley State led 14-10 five minutes into the game after two 3-pointers by Price. The Wolverines then went on a 13-2 run.
In the second half,
the Wolverines extended their lead to 64-35 following another 3-pointer from
Price with 15:22 left in the game.
Omar Thomas scored 24 points to lead Texas-El Paso to an 84-63 victory over Mississippi Valley State in the opening round of the Sierra Providence SunClassic Basketball Tournament Saturday.
Thomas was 6-of-8 from the floor and 12-of-15 from the free throw line.
John Tofi had 13
points for the Miners, while Jason Williams had 11 points and Fili Rivera added
10. Rivera and Chris Craig had seven assists.
UTEP (8-1) will meet the winner of the tournament's second first-round game
between Rutgers and Northwestern in Sunday's championship game.
Attarrius Norwood led Mississippi Valley State (5-4) with 20 points, while Edward Mack added 15. But Norwood and Mack combined to shoot just 10-of-32 from the floor.
The Miners outshot Mississippi Valley State 54 percent to 30 percent from the field.
UTEP took control early, jumping out to a 22-4 lead in the game's first eight minutes en route to a 42-21 halftime lead.
